Disney's New Genie Service
This week Disney announced the upcoming release of the new Disney Genie digital service. At this time they have not released the full details, so stay tuned for more information as it is released.
What is Disney Genie?
This new digital app guides Guests through both the Walt Disney World and Disneyland theme parks with tips that can help reduce time in lines, discover something new around every corner, and plan your park experience on the go.
Disney Genie will be built right into the current My Disney Experience app. It will include a personalized itinerary feature that will help map out an entire day, including attractions, food, and entertainment.
Does this app replace a travel agent?
No, the app will complement the service we provide to you today. With the app, you will have the ability to have a built-in support system right there in the parks with you. Before you travel, we will still plan out the details, talk through your Must-Do items, and plan out any dining options. When you arrive at Disney (either Walt Disney World or Disneyland) the Genie will take over and help you navigate the parks, rides, character sightings, and food.
What else will the Genie do?
Disney Genie will continue to update your itinerary throughout your day, so you don't have to worry about tight schedules and wasting time trying to make sure you catch each ride at just the right time. It will also allow you to enter your favorite rides, characters, and shows, alerting you of wait times, character locations, and options for mobile food ordering. Some rides will also have the ability to enter a virtual queue (like Rise of the Resistance has today) so you can secure a spot in line without waiting in one place for long periods of time.
What is Lightening Lane? Lightning Lane is a new version of the FastPass and FastPass+, although it will work a little differently.
Disney Genie+ service is an add-on option that you will purchase before you travel. We will talk through this option and plan it out as part of your vacation planning experience. This new service is a paid option, unlike the previous system. There are some perks to this, however. For the price of $15 per ticket per day at Walt Disney World Resort and $20 per ticket per day at Disneyland Resort, you can choose the next available time to arrive at a variety of attractions and experiences using the Lightning Lane entrance. This means no trying to plan your rides months in advance and hope that everyone is up and on the bus and in the right place at a certain time. You will now be free to be a little more spontaneous on your vacation, which will be a great relief for many of you. Through the app, you will be able to make one ride/show selection at a time, but you can now do this all day instead of only selecting 3 before you travel and possibly not getting any others throughout the day. The Genie+ option will also work across multiple parks on the same day, unlike the previous option which could only pre-scheduled for one park per day.
Are all the rides and shows going to use Lightning Lane?
There will be some attractions that will require an additional purchase to use the Lightning Lane feature. At this time we do not know what the cost will be or which attractions will be included in that list. We do know that these high-demand options will likely vary in price by both attraction and date. - Stay tuned for more information on this portion.
Does the Disney Genie+ package include anything except the Lightning Lane options?
Disney Genie+ will also include Disney parks-themed audio experiences and photo features to capture your memories – augmented reality lenses for those visiting Walt Disney World Resort and unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads from your day if you are visiting Disneyland Resort. (The Walt Disney World PhotoPass option will not be included in the Genie+ purchase initially)
How does this impact the Disability Access Service (DAS)?
Disney will also be making some enhancements to the Disability Access Service (DAS) program. Currently, everyone is required to visit a Guest Services location inside the park on their first day to request the DAS. The Disney Genie app will provide some new options to enroll in the program pre-arrival and for DAS participants to select arrival windows for attractions directly in the app. The current in-person DAS program will still be in place for anyone choosing to still visit Guest Services for additional support or guidance on the program.
When will this start?
An official date has not been released at this time but it is likely coming soon.
